Sixteen-year-old Jamal Wallace, a bright student from the Bronx, New York, is not interested in school and enjoys playing basketball with his friends. After scoring exceptionally high on a statewide test and becoming a talented basketball player, Jamal is accepted with a scholarship to a prestigious prep school in Manhattan. There, he meets reclusive and Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Forrester, and an unlikely friendship begins. Forrester guides Jamal's discovery and development of his writing talent, while Jamal tries to bring Forrester out of his long seclusion. The film follows Jamal as he deals with challenges in both his academic and personal life, especially accusations of plagiarism from his stern literature teacher, Robert Crawford, and pursues his dreams.
