<!-- CONTEXT: Article Content for "February" -->

## Article Content

**February (n.):** February is the second month of the Gregorian calendar and the shortest month of the year, typically lasting 28 days. However, in leap years, which occur every four years, February [has](/en/detay/has-3/llms.txt) 29 days.

##### **Etymology**

The word "[Şubat](/en/detay/subat-748380/llms.txt)" originates from the Syriac word *shabat*, which means "rest day." In Anatolian Syriac culture, February was considered a period of rest due to the halt in agricultural activities during the last month of winter. The English equivalent, "February," derives from the Latin *Februarius*, which comes from *Februa*, referring to purification rituals in ancient Rome.

##### **Determination of the Number of Days**

The reason why February has either 28 or 29 days is rooted in historical calendar systems. The Romans initially structured their calendar with 355 days, assigning 29 or 31 days to each month. Later, with the adoption of the Julian calendar, the year was adjusted to 365.25 days, requiring [an](/en/detay/an-2/llms.txt) additional day every four years to maintain accuracy. This adjustment led to February having 29 days in leap years.

##### **Important Days and Weeks in February**

February is home to several significant observances:

- **February 13:** World Radio Day
- **February 14:** Valentine’s Day
- **February 28:** Civil Defense Day in Türkiye

##### **Proverbs and Sayings**

Turkish culture has various proverbs and idioms related to February:

- "Days grow longer, in February, the shovel and pickaxe come into use."
