# eSIM (Embedded SIM)

## Article Content

The **eSIM** (embedded Subscriber Identity Module) is a digital alternative to the traditional SIM card, permanently embedded in a device's hardware. It is designed to store mobile network authentication data and enables remote management of mobile subscriptions without the need for physical SIM card swapping. The [eSIM](/en/detay/airalo/llms.txt) standard is governed by the GSM Association (GSMA) and [has](/en/detay/has-3/llms.txt) applications in consumer electronics, Internet of Things ([IoT](/en/detay/iot-internet-of-things-57ae7/llms.txt)) devices, and [machine-to-machine (M2M) communication systems](/en/detay/communication-systems-7337d/llms.txt).

### **Functionality**

[An](/en/detay/an-2/llms.txt) eSIM performs the same role as a physical SIM card by providing the credentials required to authenticate a device on a mobile network. However, it differs in its form and capabilities:

- **Non-Removable:** The eSIM chip is embedded in the device, making it a fixed component.
- **Remote Provisioning:** Mobile network profiles can be downloaded and activated over the air (OTA), eliminating the need for physical card handling.
- **Multiple Profiles:** eSIMs can store several operator profiles, allowing users to switch networks without replacing hardware.

The technology supports flexibility in device design by removing the requirement for a physical SIM card slot.

### **Development and Adoption**

**Traditional SIM Evolution:**

- SIM cards were introduced in 1991 to store network authentication data on removable cards.
- Over time, SIM cards were reduced in size, evolving from full-sized SIMs to nano-SIMs by 2012.

**Introduction of eSIM:**

- eSIM technology emerged in 2010, initially targeting IoT applications to address challenges with physical SIM deployment in remote or inaccessible locations.
- The GSMA published the eSIM standard in 2016, facilitating its adoption in consumer devices.

**Consumer Device Integration:**

- The first consumer device to feature eSIM was the Samsung Gear S2 Classic 3G smartwatch in 2016.
- Google and Apple incorporated eSIM technology into smartphones, starting with the Google Pixel 2 and iPhone XS in 2018.

### **Applications**

**Consumer Electronics:**

- eSIMs are integrated into smartphones, tablets, and wearable devices, enabling easier network switching and dual-network support.

**IoT Devices:**

- Devices such as smart meters, connected vehicles, and industrial sensors rely on eSIMs for stable connectivity in environments where physical SIM cards are impractical.

**M2M Communication:**

- eSIMs streamline the deployment and management of M2M networks by enabling OTA provisioning of connections.

### **Technical Characteristics**

- **Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP):** eSIMs allow for the activation, update, or replacement of operator profiles remotely through RSP.
- **Compact Design:** The embedded nature of eSIMs removes the need for a physical SIM slot, which can save space in device designs.
- **Multi-Network Support:** The ability to store multiple operator profiles allows for switching networks based on user preferences or operational requirements.

### **Challenges**

**Network Support:**

- Adoption of eSIMs varies by region, and not all carriers support eSIM provisioning.

**Compatibility:**

- Older devices and some network infrastructures are incompatible with eSIM technology.

**Security Risks:**

- The centralized management of eSIM profiles requires robust security measures to prevent unauthorized access or tampering.

**Consumer Awareness:**

- Awareness and understanding of eSIM technology remain limited, which can slow its adoption.
