Education

Maarif has been adopted into Turkish from the Arabic word maʿārif. The term is the plural form of maʿrifa, which in Arabic means “knowledge, skill, recognition.” During the Ottoman period, it was widely used to refer to education, instruction, and cultural knowledge domains. In modern Turkish, it has acquired a specific meaning associated with the education system and instruction activities.

• Education: Used to denote schools, the instructional system, and educational activities.
• Culture and Science: Describes a society’s level of knowledge, accumulated experience, and cultural development.
• Public Administration: Used in official contexts relating to educational institutions and the National Education structure.
• Sufism: Preferred to express the concept of spiritual knowledge, mystical insight, and the pursuit of truth.
• Social Life: Used to assess a society’s level of education and culture.
