Çamlıhemşin (District)

Çamlıhemşin is a district in Black Sea Region,隶属于 Rize Province in Türkiye. It is situated in the depths of the Storm Valley, at the foothills of the Kaçkar Mountains. The history of Çamlıhemşin extends back to antiquity. The region has been inhabited successively by the Colchians, Lazica, the Romans, the Byzantines, and the Trabzon Empire’s judgment. The settlement, which gained municipal status in 1953 under the name “Çamlıca,” became a district in 1957 under its current name, Çamlıhemşin.

Çamlıhemşin lies southeast of the city center of Rize, at an elevation of approximately 300 meters above sea. The district covers an area of 880 km². Region has a typical Black Sea climate, receiving abundant rainfall throughout the year and exhibiting high humidity levels. This climate provides favorable conditions for tea agriculture and forest production.

According to 2021 data, the population of Çamlıhemşin is 6,280. The district is home to various ethnic groups, primarily the Hemşinli and Laz communities. The majority of the population resides in rural areas, where traditional ways of life continue to exert a strong influence.

The economy of Çamlıhemşin is primarily based on agriculture, animal husbandry, and tourism. Tea cultivation is the most important economic activity in the district and supports other local sectors. Additionally, beekeeping and forest-based industry industries hold significant importance in the region.
