**Blagaj Tekke** (in Bosnian: *Blagajska Tekija*) is a historical Sufi structure located in the south of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the town of Blagaj, which is part of the city of [Mostar](/en/detay/mostar-bridge-b80b8/llms.txt). The tekke is situated right next to the karstic spring of the Buna River and stands as one of the examples of [Ottoman](/en/detay/the-turkish-general-architectural-understanding-a9/llms.txt)-era Sufi architecture in the [Balkans](/en/detay/the-hidden-treasure-of-the-balkans-places-to-see-i/llms.txt). Associated with the Halveti and Bektashi orders, the structure played a functional role in shaping the religious and social practices of Islamic culture in the region.

### **Historical Background**

The construction of the tekke dates back to the mid-15th century, shortly after the Ottoman Empire conquered Bosnia. Its architecture and location reflect the Ottoman urban planning approach, which emphasized harmony with natural water sources. According to archaeological and historical sources, the [Blagaj Tekke](/en/detay/blagay-tekkesi-a0117/llms.txt) was first built in the 1470s. It underwent various restorations in the 17th and 19th centuries, during which certain architectural elements were modified.

### **Architectural Features**

Blagaj Tekke is a structure that reflects the characteristics of Ottoman civil architecture, combining stone and wood materials. Due to its proximity to the source of the Buna River, it was built in harmony with the natural environment. The tekke includes spaces such as a *semahane* (hall for ritual chanting and remembrance), guesthouse, sheikh’s room, kitchen, and mausoleum. Among the defining elements of the interior are the low ceilings and detailed wooden craftsmanship. The building was constructed with simplicity in mind and follows a functional, inward-oriented spatial layout.

### **Function and Use**

The tekke served not only as a place of worship but also hosted activities such as education, social assistance, and religious gatherings. It was a place where dervishes affiliated with the Halveti order received Sufi training, and where remembrance ceremonies (*dhikr*), spiritual discussions, and religious teachings were held. Today, the tekke remains open to the public for both worship and visitation. The traditional "[Mevlud](/en/detay/mevlana-museum-b59fe/llms.txt)" event held in May stands out as one of its current functions.

Restoration and conservation efforts began in the late 20th century and have been carried out with the support of both local and international organizations. As a result of these efforts, the structure has been preserved and is now open to visitors.
