Atasu Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant

Atasu Dam is a multipurpose dam constructed in Trabzon to provide drinking, domestic, and industry water and to generate electricity power. It was designed to meet Trabzon city’s water demand and produce hydroelectric energy.

Dam is located on the Galyan Stream within the boundaries of Maçka district in Trabzon, approximately 17 km from city center.

• Height: 118 metres (from foundation)
• Embankment Volume: 4.65 million m³
• Storage Capacity: 35.75 million m³

The Atasu Dam provides 91.25 million m³ of drinking, domestic and industrial water annually and generates 27.14 GWh of electricity per year through a hydroelectric power plant with an installed capacity of 5 MW.

• Impoundment Start: 28 December 2010
• Water Distribution Start: 15 April 2011
• Completion Date: 27 March 2012

With the commissioning of the dam, drinking water shortages in Trabzon province were largely resolved and water quality was improved through treatment facilities. Rapid progress is also being made on the second-phase treatment facilities and water transmission lines, which are part of the ongoing project.

In addition to meeting the region’s drinking water needs, it contributes economically through energy production. Furthermore, it plays a critical role in public health by making significant contributions to the sustainable management of water resources.
