Ardahan Castle is located right in the heart of the city, immediately beside the roaring Kura River. This massive stone structure has served as a loyal sentinel for centuries, sheltering great empires such as the Ottomans and the Seljuks.
When Was This Castle Built?
The exact date of the castle’s original construction is unknown, but research indicates that people lived on this site as far back as the Bronze Age.
The castle as we see it today was rebuilt around 500 years ago by order of the Ottoman sultan Kanuni Sultan Süleyman. Above the western main gate there is an Arabic inscription (kitabe) stating that the castle was constructed in 1544.

How Was the Castle Constructed?
The walls of Ardahan Castle are exceptionally strong, built using rugged basalt stones and a highly durable mortar known as “Horasan harcı.” Horasan harcı contains tightly woven, ancient fabric fragments that reinforce its strength.
Numerous towers line the castle walls. The construction style of these towers and walls closely resembles that of the famous Rumeli Hisarı in Istanbul.
What Is Inside the Castle?
Large gates provide access to the interior of the castle. In addition to the main western gate, there were once other entrances such as the “Su Kapısı” or Water Gate, which opened toward ancient river channels. From the ramparts, you can survey the entire Ardahan plain and the riverbanks as if flying like a bird.
A Journey Through Time
Exactly 480 years ago, in 1544, laborers stacked stones one upon another to build this fortress for Kanuni Sultan Süleyman. At that time, there were no carts or electricity anywhere.
