Ancient City of Kelenderis
Kelenderis Ancient City is a very old port city located in the southern part of Türkiye, in the Aydıncık district of Mersin Province. Situated along the Mediterranean coast, this city has been inhabited for thousands of years. In antiquity, merchant ships would dock here to buy and sell goods and engage in trade with distant lands. Today, remnants of the harbor, baths, theater, cemetery (necropolis), and thick stone walls still remain visible.
History
The history of Kelenderis extends back to the 5th century BCE. During this period, the city became a member of the powerful Delian League and established itself as a major hub in maritime trade. Later, during the Hellenistic period, it forged alliances with the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt and rose to prominence along Mediterranean trade routes.
During the Roman period, the city faced difficulties due to pirate raids but experienced a revival thanks to the protection offered by the Roman Empire. It continued to exist through the Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods. Under the Ottomans, it served as an important port for maritime connections between Türkiye and Cyprus. Today, part of the ancient city lies beneath the modern district of Aydıncık.

Location and Geographical Features
Kelenderis Ancient City is situated between the foothills of the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. This strategic location made it both easy to defend and ideal as a trading port. In antiquity, ships departed from here to reach Cyprus and other harbors of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Excavations and Discoveries
Excavations have uncovered numerous significant structures, including an ancient bath, a theater, city walls, and cemetery areas (necropolis). One of the most remarkable structures is the monumental tomb known as the "Four Legs." The mosaic floors of the bath reveal the high level of artistic development during that era. Additionally, ceramic fragments found at the site confirm that the city engaged in trade with various regions of the Mediterranean as early as the 2nd century BCE. In recent years, excavations have revealed a 2,500-year-old city gate and a stone staircase.
