Nevşehir Ortahisar Castle
The exact date when the construction of Ortahisar Castle began is not definitively known. However, scholars believe that the massive rock was carved out during the Hittite period around 1500 BCE, approximately 3500 years ago. The Hittites used the rock both as a shelter and as an observation post. After the Hittites, the castle was also used by various civilizations including the Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans, each adapting the structure to their own needs.

Why Is It an Important Structure?
Ortahisar Castle is considered one of the largest fairy chimneys in Cappadocia. It is located on one of the highest points in the Cappadocia region. The castle’s elevated position made it a crucial observation point. From the castle, the surrounding valleys and other settlements can be easily seen, which greatly aided its rapid defense during wartime. Additionally, due to its location along important trade routes such as the Silk Road, the castle held a strategic position.
What Does the Castle Look Like?
The castle rises approximately 86 meters above ground level and stands at an elevation of 1200 meters above sea level. Its structure resembles a multi-story ancient skyscraper. Inside the castle, tunnels, staircases, and rooms have been carved into the rock, all interconnected. Thanks to the cool air inside, the local population formerly used these hollowed-out spaces as storage areas to keep food fresh, especially citrus fruits and potatoes. Thus, the castle served not only as a refuge but also as a center for daily life and trade.
