The monument is believed to have been constructed approximately 1800 years ago, in the 2nd century CE. At that time, this region lay within the borders of the Roman Empire (an empire is a state with vast territories). Wealthy and important individuals living in Rome would commission monumental tombs, known as mausoleums, upon their death. These tombs were built to demonstrate the deceased person’s importance and to preserve their name for posterity.

What Kind of Structure Is It?
The Ozan Monument is a square structure built from precisely cut stone blocks and resembles ancient Greek temples.
On its front facade are twelve non-load-bearing half-columns (columns that appear as if half-buried in the wall). These columns give the structure a highly ornate and impressive appearance.
The identity of the person for whom the monument was built remains unknown, as there are no inscriptions or writings on it. This absence adds to the monument’s mystery.
