Lazy Animal
Sloths are the slowest-moving mammals on Earth, living in the rainforests of South and Central America. Have you ever imagined a creature that lives its entire life in slow motion? That is exactly what sloths are!

Where Do They Live? 🌳
Sloths live high up in the canopy of broadleaf tropical forests. They spend nearly their entire lives hanging upside down from branches. All their activities—sleeping, eating, and caring for their young—are carried out among the treetops. They rarely leave the trees to stay safe, descending to the ground only once a week to relieve themselves.
Why Are They So Slow? 🐢
Sloths have a very specialized diet. They typically eat tree leaves, fresh buds, and soft twigs. Like cows, they have four-chambered stomachs, but because leaves contain very little energy, it takes them a long time to digest them. Fully digesting a meal can sometimes take up to a whole month!
Because they have so little energy, they must use it very carefully. This is why they move so slowly and rest by sleeping between 15 and 18 hours a day to conserve energy. Their muscle mass is also much lower than that of other mammals.

A Hidden World in Their Fur! 🦋
Unlike most mammals, the hairs on sloths grow from their belly toward their back (upward). This unique feature allows heavy rainwater to easily run off their fur, keeping them dry.
In addition, their fur is like a miniature forest! During humid seasons, green algae grow between their hairs. These algae help them blend in with the leaves for camouflage and provide an excellent habitat for harmless moths and insects.
What Surprising Abilities Do They Have? 🏊♂️
Sloths struggle to walk on land because their 8 to 10 centimeter long, hook-like claws are designed not for walking but for gripping tree branches tightly. Yet, despite their slow movement in trees, sloths are surprisingly strong swimmers! When rainforests flood or when they need to move between trees, they leap into the water and swim using their arms in a froglike motion.

Time Travel ⏳
Modern sloths are about the size of a small dog and weigh no more than 9 kilograms. However, tens of thousands of years ago, giant ground sloths roamed the Earth. These ancient ancestors lived on the ground, not in trees. They reached heights of up to 3.5 meters and were massive creatures weighing nearly four tons, almost as large as elephants!
