Fırtına Stream (Rize)
In the north of Türkiye, in the emerald-green city of Rize, drenched by rains in every season, flows one of nature’s greatest and most thrilling miracles: Fırtına Deresi. This river, named for the forceful, rapid, and frothy flow of its waters—just like a fierce storm—is the most vivid embodiment of the Black Sea’s spirit and turbulence.
Where Is Fırtına Deresi and How Does It Form?
Fırtına Deresi lies within the boundaries of Rize’s Çamlıhemşin and Ardeşen districts. It does not originate from a single source; rather, it is fed by the melting snows of the towering Kaçkar Mountains and the region’s renowned heavy rainfall.
Small streams descending from the high slopes of the mountains—such as Büyük Dere and Palovit Deresi—converge near Çamlıhemşin to form a powerful river. Flowing approximately 68 kilometers, it winds through lush valleys, cliffs, and forests before finally emptying into the blue waters of the Black Sea near Ardeşen.

Natural Life and Spectacular Environment
The surroundings of Fırtına Deresi are covered by some of the world’s most unique and protected forests. The area is so rich in vegetation that every step you take reveals hundreds of different shades of green.
Red-Spotted Trout: The icy, pristine waters of Fırtına Deresi are home to the world-famous red-spotted trout, a species found nowhere else on Earth.
Migratory Birds and Wildlife: The valley formed by the river serves as a habitat for raptors, bears, bearded mountain goats, and brown bears.
Historic Stone Arch Bridges
When Fırtına Deresi is mentioned, it is not only the wild waters that come to mind but also the fairy-tale bridges built across them. These bridges, constructed centuries ago during the Ottoman period by local communities, connect the two banks of the river.
Did you know? No cement was used in the construction of these bridges! Built entirely from natural stones interlocked through arch architecture, they have stood firm for hundreds of years against the raging waters beneath. The most famous among them are Şenyuva Bridge and Mikron Bridge.
Center of Adventure and Sport
Fırtına Deresi is a destination admired by adventure seekers and athletes worldwide. The speed of its current and the large boulders in its riverbed have made it Türkiye’s most important center for river sports.
Rafting and Canoeing: Professional athletes and tourists from around the globe paddle against the turbulent waves using rafts or single-person canoes. The river is so challenging and high-quality that international World Rafting Championships are held here.
Zipline: For adventure lovers, steel cables strung across the river offer the thrilling experience of flying like a bird from one bank to the other—one of the area’s most popular attractions.
