Bebekli Church

Architectural Features and Statue
The most striking feature of the Bebekli Kilise is the large statue standing at its summit. The statue is exactly 2.5 meters tall and represents the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. The church received its name because, when viewed from a distance, the statue resembles a mother holding a baby.
Social Services
The church was not only a place of worship but also housed important facilities such as a school, a hospital, and an orphanage. Over time, however, it lost its functions and was closed.
Worship and Religious Life
The Bebekli Kilise is a Catholic church. Inside, visitors can see numerous paintings, statues, and crosses depicting the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Special garments are worn during services, and every aspect of the ritual follows a precise order. Additionally, inside the church hangs a flag representing the Vatican alongside a proudly fluttering Turkish flag. This reflects the church’s dual identity—both international and local.
The Church Today and Its Visitors
Today, the Bebekli Kilise remains one of the largest churches in Adana still open for worship. Many local and foreign tourists visit especially to see the statue of the Virgin Mary.
