Journey into the Past: How Old is Altunhisar?
The history of Altunhisar stretches back to the earliest times when humans transitioned to settled life. Research conducted in the region shows that people lived here thousands of years ago.
Throughout history, many great empires including the Romans, Seljuks, and Ottomans have inhabited these lands. Even today, a church dating back to the Roman era remains in Yeşilyurt Village, and caves once used as dwellings by ancient people still exist to the east of the district.
Where Does the Name Come From?
The district was formerly known as "Ortaköy". However, in 1956, its name was changed to "Altunhisar", inspired by the Altıntaş Plain located to the south of the region. This name symbolizes the exceptional value and fertility of the land.

What Grows in Altunhisar?
The most important occupation of the people living in Altunhisar is agriculture and animal husbandry. If you ever visit the area, you will see these products everywhere:
- Bright Red Apples: One of the region’s most famous fruits.
- Potatoes: This delicious crop, harvested from the soil, is a symbol of the district.
- Strawberries and Wheat: In summer, fragrant strawberries and golden wheat fields adorn the landscape.
Where Is It and What Is the Climate Like?
The district is situated on a high plateau at the foot of the majestic Hasandağı, far above sea level. It is approximately 35 kilometers from the city center of Niğde. Summers are hot and dry while winters are cold, making for a typical Central Anatolian climate.
